Background

 

On 29 March 2006 over 50 people attended a forum called “What’s happening for young people in Hornby?”.

 

The invitation to the forum was generated by the Child, Youth and Family Youth Justice staff based at the Hornby Heartlands Centre and described the opportunity as follows:

What’s happening for young people in Hornby?

 

This will be an opportunity to: -

 

-          Tell about the service you or your organisation is providing for youth and their families;

-          Hear about other youth services available in Hornby

-          Identify the gaps in services

-          Discuss how we can work together to enhance services”

 

The forum worked through several structured small group-work exercises to identify service gaps and potential actions to enhance services for youth.

Dedicated Youth social workers in Schools/Community.

Family & youth service; Strengthening Families – preventative work.

Mäori – services for.

Youth health need – Partnership health funding.

Actionworks to Heartlands (CDC – youth into work).

Mental health coordinator – link to education (school, refusal, clinic)

School & service for teenage parents. Respite for teachers.

Respite for families.

Public health services.

Kimihia type programme – young parents support.

Stopping Violence.

Youth specialty services.

Drug & Alcohol services (e.g. Waipuna Trust)

Marae

CYF – reducing offending.

Family Group Conference monitoring.

‘Hub’ accessing service to all other services – link in with Hornby High School.

Space available for town based agencies to work in the area & knowledge of the space.

Transport to services outside of Hornby – recreational and social services.

Health – access to appropriate health care – e.g. 198 YHCentre Doctor available 1 – 2 days per week.

Kaupapa mäori services.

Pacific services.

Asian services.

Annual event (youth day) to be informed of youth services/providers. E.g. similar to LYFE (Linwood Youth Festival Experience).

Support for whänau.

Young women specific services.

Knowledge/advertising CCC youth liaison meeting.

Research the need for services like Kimihia.

After school youth programmes around Hei Hei community centre.

Advocacy for young people.

Accessing services based in town.

Drop-in Centre.

Education for young mums.

Social opportunities for young people plus respite care.

Family planning.

Recreational facilities.

Peer support.

Access to health services for young people.

Sports providers/groups.

Metro/Orbitor – outskirts including Hornby through to Darfield.

Identify up to 3 achievable strategies and their actions that could be successfully progressed through this forum to enhance services for youth

 

Education for young mothers – link between Gilbethorpes School/Hornby High School/Early Learning Centre Crèche – Early Start, PAFT, Waipuna Trust.

Mental health and education.

School for teenage parents.

Youth Wellbeing Centre. (198 YHC as a model)

Cultural – Pacific mental health; Pacific Coordinator.

Maori – Mental health providers & holiday programmes.

Sustain & utilise current services. Support from community groups; building relationships with community; regular dialogue between all local services agencies. Media awareness of services provided. Gala day.

Transport – Ecan reviewing services – submission needs to be put forward. Useful to have a directory of community vans/vehicles owned by local groups that are available.

Youth Health Centre – bring 198 YHC to Hornby?

Better coordination of existing services.

Transport needs to enable rural/semi rural youth to get to town.
