Hornby: The Clock Tower Building

(old Central Canterbury Electrical Building)

I grew up in Hornby and remember this building well. You may have noticed it is changing at the moment.

Lorelei contacted us with this comment:
"Hi was just looking at this site and it is wonderful; how great to read about the history of our suburb. I was wondering with the demise of the Clock Tower building on Main South Road, whether there was any history available on this building, when it was built, what it's been used for over the years ( I remember South Power!). Any information you could find out would be greatly appreciated, another piece of Hornby history has sadly disappeared."

Stephen P. from Hornby Online comments in reply:

"They are not getting rid of the clock tower - its only being revamped to make it a more profitable building..."

Other memories from a group on facebook (used with permission) mostly born in the '70s include:

"I remember going to the movies there in the holidays as a kid. Wicked cartoons ( they were then and still are now too)"

"That was where I had my first summer job working at the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board with my Dad"

"Yes mate I remember going to the movies there, didn't we have to sit on the floor? pretty sure we did"

"I think the smaller ones had to sit on the floor but I vaguely remember wooden benches. I remember walking to the dairy near where Dressmart is now for lollies first some times."

"wasn't it like 50 cents or something to go, cheep to get us out of our parents hair for a hour or two."

"awww I remember watching cartoons there too! and yes we had to sit on the floor."

"Nothing like a trip down memory lane, I saw Herbie goes Bananas there."

"No wide screen or surround sound back then. They projected it straight onto the painted block wall."

Does anyone else have memories about the use of this building over the years, pictures etc they would like to share? Please contact us if you do.

Compiled by Roslyn.

Please contact the Hornby Online Team if you have more early history to add about the Clock Tower Building..
